Gut Health as the Gateway to Well-Being

“All disease begins in the gut.” – Hippocrates.

Over two thousand years ago, Hippocrates recognized something that modern science is only beginning to confirm: the gut is at the center of health. Far more than a digestive organ, the gut is the foundation of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It influences immunity, metabolism, hormone balance, brain function, and resilience to stress. In many ways, the gut is your body’s “second brain,” constantly communicating with nearly every system. When the gut is balanced, vitality flows. But poor diet, stress, toxins, infections, or medication overuse can disrupt it, leading to inflammation, nutrient loss, autoimmunity, allergies, and metabolic issues.

The Digestive System: Core Functions

The digestive system powers the body by breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, fueling energy, and eliminating waste. These processes are directed by the nervous system, hormones, and the gut microbiome. The gut microbiota—trillions of microbes with a gene pool 150 times larger than ours—is essential to health. It breaks down complex foods, produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), trains and regulates the immune system, controls inflammation, and synthesizes vitamins and metabolites. A healthy microbiome protects and strengthens the body.

The Forgotten Brain

The gut houses between 100–500 million neurons, earning it the title of “second brain.” These neurons, in communication with the brain via the vagus nerve, regulate digestion and influence mental clarity, mood, and emotional balance.

Brain-gut communication works in two directions. Stress and emotions from the brain affect gut motility, enzyme secretion, and inflammatory tone. At the same time, signals from the gut microbiota shape brain chemistry and behaviour. Disturbances in this bidirectional system are associated with anxiety, depression, autism, and even neurodegenerative diseases.

Modern Lifestyle, Ancient System

Our ancestors lived close to nature, ate whole foods, and carried diverse microbes. Today, processed diets, antibiotics, chemical exposures, and chronic stress erode gut health. The result is a breakdown of the gut lining, leading to increased intestinal permeability (aka leaky gut). Molecules such as microbes, microbial byproducts, and toxins pass through the intestinal barrier, activating the immune system. This immune activation releases inflammatory mediators that worsen permeability and spread systemic inflammation. The result is a vicious cycle of tissue damage, immune hyperactivation, and symptoms far beyond the digestive tract, including fatigue, headaches, insomnia, breathing difficulties, sinusitis, mood disturbances, difficulty concentrating, brain fog, muscle and joint pain, skin problems, weight fluctuations, and more.

Healing the Gut: A Gateway to Vibrant Health

Gut healing is not a single intervention but a layered, whole-person approach. The pathway to restoring well-being includes:

  1. Remove: Eliminate inflammatory foods, toxins, infections, mold, and chemical exposures.
  2. Restore: Support stomach acid, bile, and enzymes for effective digestion.
  3. Rebalance: Repopulate the microbiome with probiotics, prebiotic foods, and ferments.
  4. Repair: Use herbs and supplements to strengthen the gut lining.
  5. Revive lifestyle: Prioritize restorative sleep, movement, toxin avoidance, and stress management.

This integrated approach shifts the gut from a source of dysfunction to a foundation of healing. When gut health is restored, energy, mood, immunity, and resilience improve dramatically.

One must also remember that true healing requires more than addressing the physical gut. Emotional stress, unresolved trauma, and energetic imbalances can disrupt digestion and immunity. Practices such as mindfulness, meditation, breathwork, and emotional processing, combined with nutrition and herbal support, create a holistic approach that heals not just symptoms, but the root causes.

Conclusion

The wisdom of Hippocrates—that “all disease begins in the gut”—remains profoundly relevant today. Modern research confirms that gut health is inseparable from overall well-being, influencing immunity, metabolism, hormones, mood, and even cognitive function. A strong, balanced digestive system and microbiome protect against disease, while disruption sets the stage for widespread inflammation and chronic illness. Caring for your gut is not simply about improving digestion; it is about restoring balance to the entire body.

„We learned early in life that someone else knew b „We learned early in life that someone else knew better than we did.“

Kelly Kolodney, known as „The Angel Lady,“ has spent nearly four decades helping people find their way back to their own inner knowing.

In a new conversation for Just Breathe Mag, she speaks about the exhaustion so many of us carry without naming it, the small practices that begin to settle a restless mind, and what it takes to trust yourself again.

In our latest essay, Maria Ushakova traces Jung’s path of individuation, the slow work of coming to know your own depths, and asks what becomes of our mental health when we look for meaning only in comfort, recognition, and wealth.

Asked late in life whether he believed in God, Jung answered: „I don’t need to believe. I know.“ ✨

In a new conversation for Just Breathe Mag, Dr. Peter Moosbrugger of @sonnenberg.health.hotel explains why illness so often takes hold long before we feel it, and what it means to start listening to the body earlier.

Sonnenberg Health Hotel is a healing hotel set high in the Swiss Appenzell hills, 972 metres above the village of Schwellbrunn. Rooted in the Biological Medicine of Dr. med. Thomas Rau, it treats the body’s own ability to regulate and regenerate as the centre of every stay. Clean mountain air and deep quiet meet a purely plant-based, gluten-free kitchen and a medicine that looks for the cause rather than the symptom.

There is a quiet moment, somewhere after the secon There is a quiet moment, somewhere after the second or third day of fasting, when the body lets go of glucose and turns to ketones instead. Something shifts. Hunger softens. The mind clears. And the noise of constant eating gives way to a deeper kind of listening.

Just Breathe Mag’s latest article follows that shift with the physicians of Marienkron Retreat and Health Resort, Dr. Ulrike Göschl and Dr. Martin Krizmanits, who gently separate what fasting truly offers from the myths that cling to it: the fear of starvation, the harsh detoxes, the truth about coffee, and why longevity is less about how long we live and more about how fully.

Psychology, in its original meaning, is the study Psychology, in its original meaning, is the study of the soul.

Yet modern medicine speaks of neurobiology, hormones, emotional regulation, and inherited traits. The soul has quietly left the conversation.

In part three of her worldview therapy series, Maria Ushakova returns to the questions psychology set aside. What lies beneath instinct, feeling, affect, and desire? And where do the roots of psychological suffering truly begin?

A reflection on ontological tendencies and the layers of the psyche.
