How to Detoxify Your Liver After a Night Out

While it isn’t a great idea to drink vasts amounts of alcohol, almost everybody lets things get out of hand every once in a while. If you spent your weekend at the bar or grilling in the yard, you may be looking for a quick hangover fix to get you back on track to productivity. While there are no magical solutions to a hangover, here are some things you can do.

 

How to Detox the Body of Alcohol

Alcohol is a neurotoxin. As with other toxins, it is handled by the liver and leaves your system over a period of hours. Alcohol causes inflammation, removes nutrients from the body, and stresses the nervous system, so the best cures for a hangover usually address these effects directly.

Humans evolved alongside alcohol, so it is OK to drink in moderation without serious health consequences. When you go overboard, however, you should do what you can to mitigate the damage. Recovering comes down to rest and nutrition.

 

Getting Enough Rest

When you have a hangover, your body needs to restore itself to its normal equilibrium. This isn’t possible if you have a stressful day of work or simply keep drinking. While it can be tempting to drown your feelings with “hair of the dog,” drinking only worsens and delays a present hangover. Try to sleep as long as possible. When you wake up, do something relaxing like walking in nature.

 

Eating and Drinking Right

Alcohol causes dehydration. You should, therefore, drink lots and lots of water. In some cases, restoring your electrolytes with electrolyte drinks can have an additional positive effect. Remember, you don’t have to wait until you have a hangover to hydrate. Drinking water between beverages can go a long way toward preventing a bad morning.

You may find that you crave strangely specific foods during a hangover. Many people prefer a breakfast rich in fats and carbohydrates after a night out. Others develop an inexplicable need for a can of coke. These cravings are your body’s way of telling you that it needs certain nutrients. While your cravings may help you to some extent, there are probably more healthy alternatives that can offer the same benefits.
