Retail Therapy – Do’s and Don’ts on How To Do It Sensibly

Many people would think that retail therapy is bad, however, when done in a mindful way, it is perfectly okay to indulge in some retail therapy. Retail therapy is a therapeutic experience, a simple and quick way to lift a negative mood, so to do it sensibly, we recommend considering our tips on how to do it in a way that won’t cause any harm.

Know That It Isn’t Always The Answer

Setting boundaries with when and how you treat yourself is the first step in avoiding any problems when shopping to cheer yourself up, especially if you are on a budget. Try limiting yourself to how many times you will treat yourself in a week or month. If retail therapy is a common and regular thing for you, keep a diary of everything you have purchased and how much you have spent.

Make The Most Of It

An enjoyable part of shopping is the time spent looking at products, trying on new outfits, or testing out beauty tools that you need. These simple activities will give your mood a boost and improve your self-confidence, enabling you to have fun.

retail therapy with friends

To make this form of therapy even more effective, invite a friend or family member to go with you. Time spent with loved ones is a great way to improve your mental health.

Buy The Luxury Item You Have Always Wanted

Assuming it is within your price range and you can afford it, don’t feel bad about splashing out on that Saint Laurent bag you have had your eye on or that pair of Fendi sneakers. Finding the perfect item to complete an outfit provides a sense of achievement, so enjoy the natural pick-me-up. While you are in stores or browsing online retailers that sell all your favorite luxury brands like designer fashion website SSENSE, consider if the accessory is also a practical item to own before you purchase. For example, bags by Saint Laurent are durable and reliable items, so it certainly won’t feel like an unnecessary buy that could lead to any regret.

Don’t Make It a Habit

Even if you can shop until you drop without breaking the bank, try not to make it your go-to therapy session.

There are lots of other ways to maintain a healthy mindset and improve your mental happiness by practicing things such as yoga and meditation, which are ideal ways to relieve stress without relying on shopping trips.

Don’t Buy Things You Will Never Use

Retail therapy can lead to feelings of regret, which overall makes the negative feelings you were trying to eliminate worse. Try making a list of things you need or have been really wanting for a while before you head to the stores.

Don’t Be Too Impulsive

Give yourself some time to think before you turn to retail therapy. Searching online retailers or browsing the mall when you are feeling your worst is when you are most vulnerable to overspending or you end up with unnecessary purchases. Try taking up to 48 hours to think about what you want to buy and if it will be a valuable addition for you.

There are lots of other ways to make yourself feel better alongside temporary mood boosters like retail therapy. The healthiest way to manage your moods is by finding the right balance between different practices that works for you.

In our latest essay, Maria Ushakova traces Jung’s path of individuation, the slow work of coming to know your own depths, and asks what becomes of our mental health when we look for meaning only in comfort, recognition, and wealth.

Asked late in life whether he believed in God, Jung answered: „I don’t need to believe. I know.“ ✨

In a new conversation for Just Breathe Mag, Dr. Peter Moosbrugger of @sonnenberg.health.hotel explains why illness so often takes hold long before we feel it, and what it means to start listening to the body earlier.

Sonnenberg Health Hotel is a healing hotel set high in the Swiss Appenzell hills, 972 metres above the village of Schwellbrunn. Rooted in the Biological Medicine of Dr. med. Thomas Rau, it treats the body’s own ability to regulate and regenerate as the centre of every stay. Clean mountain air and deep quiet meet a purely plant-based, gluten-free kitchen and a medicine that looks for the cause rather than the symptom.

There is a quiet moment, somewhere after the secon There is a quiet moment, somewhere after the second or third day of fasting, when the body lets go of glucose and turns to ketones instead. Something shifts. Hunger softens. The mind clears. And the noise of constant eating gives way to a deeper kind of listening.

Just Breathe Mag’s latest article follows that shift with the physicians of Marienkron Retreat and Health Resort, Dr. Ulrike Göschl and Dr. Martin Krizmanits, who gently separate what fasting truly offers from the myths that cling to it: the fear of starvation, the harsh detoxes, the truth about coffee, and why longevity is less about how long we live and more about how fully.

Psychology, in its original meaning, is the study Psychology, in its original meaning, is the study of the soul.

Yet modern medicine speaks of neurobiology, hormones, emotional regulation, and inherited traits. The soul has quietly left the conversation.

In part three of her worldview therapy series, Maria Ushakova returns to the questions psychology set aside. What lies beneath instinct, feeling, affect, and desire? And where do the roots of psychological suffering truly begin?

A reflection on ontological tendencies and the layers of the psyche.
