Have you ever heard the phrase “You are what you eat”? According to the World Health Organization, a healthy diet is essential for keeping good health and preventing many chronic and deadly diseases. Certain foods may not only boost your immune system but also reverse the aging process. Here are the eight best anti-aging foods that will help you stay young and healthy.

1. Pumpkin Seeds

pumpkin seeds anti-aging foods

Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc, tryptophan, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. These substances improve skin elasticity and promote wound healing. Pumpkin seeds also contain antioxidants such as carotenoids and vitamin E, which reduce the risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol levels.

Zinc is involved in many regulating and learning processes. It also protects you from the harmful effects of UV-rays, prevents wrinkles, suppresses free radicals, and reduces inflammation. Zinc deficiency may result in acne, eczema, hair loss, and brittle nails.

Among other benefits, pumpkin seeds can prevent prostate disease and improve male fertility. Tryptophan helps boosts sleep quality which is essential for beauty and longevity. The American Heart Association and Mayo Clinic recommend eating 1.5 ounces of pumpkin seeds per day.

2. Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain lycopene which is responsible for the tomato’s red color. This substance is essential for us since it protects the skin from sunburn.

Lack of lycopene and beta-carotene increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Therefore eating raw or cooked tomatoes as well as tomato juice will help reduce the risk of heart diseases. Lycopene also reduces cholesterol levels in the blood and strengthens the blood vessels, that’s why doctors often use it for varicose vein treatment.

3. Oily Fish

Oily fish (mackerel, salmon, herring, tuna, etc. are great anti-aging foods) is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DMAE (2-dimethylaminoethanol). Studies confirm that eating a diet rich in oily fish prevents wrinkles and improves skin appearance. Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties, improve the skin, nails, and hair, and are essential for bone health.

DMAE is a compound contained in oily fish that is produced by our brain. It’s responsible for memory health and improving mood. DMAE deficiency can lead to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and depression.

4. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate contains flavonoids that have anti-inflammatory effects and fight free radicals that lead to premature aging. One study found that cocoa and dark chocolate have more antioxidant activity than many other anti-aging foods including blueberries and acai berries. In addition, cocoa beans activate serotonin production which makes you happy. Choose chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 70–85%. You can also buy cocoa beans themselves, grind in them, and season sweets.

5. Almonds

Almonds are rich in flavonoids, vitamin E, L-arginine, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and magnesium. They also contain good quality vegetable fats and antioxidants but they are found in the peel, that’s why it’s better to eat unpeeled almonds. Magnesium has a positive effect on blood vessels. Almonds reduce the harmful effects of smoking and may even boost libido in men. Australian nutritionists have concluded that the optimal serving is up to 20 almonds per day

6. Parsley

Parsley contains myristicin, vitamin C, carotenoids, and chlorophyll. It has an anti-inflammatory effect, contains a lot of antioxidants, cleanses the blood, and promotes glutathione production which plays a key role in maintaining a youthful appearance. In addition, parsley helps get rid of edema and protects against pathogenic bacteria.

7. Lemon

Lemons are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, lemon oil, flavonoids, citric, and other plant acids. Lemon juice contains vitamin C and antioxidants which boost the immune system. Lemon juice also reduces body oxidation which, in turn, improves kidney function and improves detoxification processes. Did you know that citrus peel is associated with reduced risk of skin cancer? This is also a great reason to consume more lemons. In addition, vitamin C helps prevent heart disease.

8. Ginger

Ginger contains cineole, citral, and gingerol. In addition to its excellent taste, ginger has also antibacterial properties. Ginger root helps eliminate chronic inflammation and speeds up wound healing processes (when eaten). In addition, ginger is used to relieve nausea and vomiting, improves blood circulation, digestion and absorption of other beneficial substances, and helps to supply oxygen to the brain and skin. And finally, ginger reduces muscle soreness after exertion.
