Discussing Clean Beauty as The Beauty Trend For The Next Decade
© JULISIS
In this in-depth interview with Julius Eulberg, founder of Julisis holistic skin care, a true alchemist and a clean beauty pioneer since 2002, we will dive deep into the upcoming beauty trends and why we all should ‘go clean’ in 2021.
In recent years clean beauty become more than just a trend. Why?
Allergies and cancer rates world wide are skyrocketing – as toxins accumulate and negatively influence our bodies which can lead to disease. Clean beauty has never been more important than right now. Air pollution, tap water, cosmetics, toxic household cleaners all end up in our systems. Everything depends on the level of consciousness and consciousness is not negotiable. We are where we are. When the time is right our values align and a wholesome partnership(s) can grow.
Way ahead of your time, you started with your clean beauty line Julisis. How has the acceptance changed over the years?
It was a rough beginning in 2002 while homeopathy was widely accepted in Germany, using fermented and probiotics in skincare was unique, and timeless unisex packaging in the luxe category a newcomer, I always say we coined the term “eco chic”. We grew very organically over the years and are now in 15 countries.
When new trends emerge, some just jump on the wave. How organic are organic brands?
So many greenwasher(s) out there – in the US you just need to use a few organic ingredients and you can label organic, there is no regulation. In Europe it is way stricter but even the most strict certifiers are lax and allow synthetics in small amounts in order to certify as many brands as possible (it is all a business). That is the reason why we refrain from certification at this point, the rules are too lax. We are 100% beyond organic through our farming methods and raw materials.
What ingredients should we, the consumers, avoid?
The list is really long: all the glycols (Pentylene-, Butylene-, Propylen-), as they make skin porous and shut down the protective ph barrier. Also the many mineral oil (crude oil waste) derived ingredients like Paraffin, Cyclomethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane. As I said, the list is long. The internet is a good source to check labels and educate yourself; cosmeticdatabase.com for example. We also issue a leaflet about ingredients to watch for all our clients.
Are there any tricks from the beauty industry that we might not be aware of?
You have to be aware that products contain the maximum allowed preservatives. Of course, you use more than one, so all maximum allowed preservatives end up at a dangerous level and accumulate in your body. What was guessed in the 80ties is now scientifically proven as most substances can be detected in the blood stream after 5 minutes. PG, or Propylen glycol (anti freeze for your wind screen wipers) got a bad reputation over time, but was widely used. Now the industry uses Propanediol which is the same chemical formula.
Hawaii recently banned many sunscreens to protect the reefs. What is inside the typical sunscreens that is also toxic for us?
Oxybenzone, Octinoxate and Acrylates Polymers and others. The oxybenzone influences the estrogen level and therefore interferes with the hormonal system. All are mutagenic for aquatic life (interfering with DNA). In our feather light sunemulsion we only use micro pulverized Titanium and Zinc Dioxide together with botanicals that already have strong sun protection (Blue Aloe, vulcanic lichen, apricot and others). Plus, it does not leave a white residue.
Pregnant women and cancer patients in particular are looking for clean beauty products. What is important for their types of skin?
The cleaner the better, from food to skin care. Clean beauty is an investment in good health. No acids whatsoever. Just fresh and powerful organic ingredients that help heal the entire organism.
You also recently launched organic tea. How important is clean nutrition and food for us?
It is a (like a) puzzle that brings your good or bad health together, from organic nutrition to high spirits, meditation and clean beauty. I have seen tremendous improvement in clients skin over the years drinking regularly organic green tea- it clears up the complexion and polyphenols, minerals and vitamins are major contributors to good health. My personal favorite is our “imperial green” a Germany bio certified Japanese tea; each sip a delight.
Spa treatments have relied on Dr and luxury brands for many years. Is this the most exclusive way to pamper yourself?
What I observed over the years is that the chicest Spas (hardware) use the worst products (software) loaded with toxins. It is time to wake up. Big time! Mostly the French brands are loaded with toxic ingredients as they rely on knowledge and formulas from the 80ties. Most Dr brands are private label brands, where you can find the same product with different names by different Docs.
Talking about spa treatments, I know you are not a fan of peelings, lasers, botox and fillers. Can you explain what happens to our skin structure over the years?
We have protective tissues for a reason, every abrasion is a micro operation and intrusion physically and spiritually. The more abrasive treatments you expose yourself the more sensitive your skin becomes. The more prone to ‘age spots’ your are. I would rather inject consciousness than fillers. It’s like curing an inside issue with an outside procedure. Or why would you put an acid on your skin? You destroy to rebuild?
What is for you the biggest skin luxury and best spa experience?
The less you do the better, right nutrition, simple skin care routine, a good facial massage, and, most important of all: cultivate a positive attitude! It helps to keep your lips pointing up rather than down. A perfect and authentic SPA experience has to be whole, from spa reception to high vibrational therapist with clean, powerful products to sounds and light – all in intentional alignment lead to deep relaxation and renewal on a soul level – a lasting imprint of true wellbeing.
