Sustainable Fashion: Cut Your Wardrobe’s Carbon Footprint

In recent years, social media has formed a habit of perpetuating fast-trend culture. Everything from TikTok dances to clothing brands can come and go in the blink of an eye or better yet a 24-hour story. Even though some of these trends may be completely harmful, others can be quite dangerous for both us and the planet.

Take the idea of fast fashion as an example. The business of mass-producing low-priced replicas of recent runway trends has proven detrimental to the environment. To put it plainly, as much as 10% of global CO2 emissions each year come from the fashion industry alone. Luckily, a more sustainable life isn’t out of reach. The minimalist fashion tips below will help you achieve it while still looking amazing!

Purchase timeless pieces

Trends may come and go, but the fact is that some pieces will never go out of style – a fine pair of denim jeans, a short black dress, a crisp white button-down shirt. These are exactly the items to shop for. The ones whose simplicity can be paired with just about anything.

Thus, instead of purchasing a fast-trend top, invest in a classic item that will work for several occasions and over several years. Creating a look around a minimalist piece such as a trench coat might just bring out the stylist in you.

Invest in high-quality clothing

Even though there are several ways of creating a sustainable wardrobe, investing in high-quality pieces is by far the simplest way to go about it. Instead of a pair of low-priced low-cut jeans, consider investing in a quality pair of denims. While fast trend items tend to stretch after a month or two, a high-quality piece will look amazing even after several years. Therefore, even if it initially comes off as expensive, a quality piece will save you a substantial amount of money along the road.

Support sustainable brands

Shopping for minimalist and sustainable pieces is a definite step in the right direction. However, it doesn’t have to be the only one. Another amazing way of minimizing your wardrobe’s carbon footprint is by shopping smart. This means doing a little digging and discovering fashion brands that use either sustainable or recyclable materials when making their pieces.

sustainable fashion brands

The idea of durable minimalist wallets is a perfect example. Since they’re made out of aluminum, these wallets are considered to be highly recyclable items. And as more brands begin to play with the idea of eco-friendly fashion, recyclable pieces are becoming available in all parts of the globe.

Learn how to care for your clothes

The tragic truth is that at some point your favorite pair of jeans will indeed be torn. Nevertheless, that tear does not have to mark the end of their life. There is a simple and eco-friendly alternative to throwing out ripped or slightly damaged clothes – just mend them! A small tear on a blouse is no match for a standard sewing kit and an endless supply of thread.

Some bigger repairs may just require a professional seamstress. Still, having your trench coach mended will end up costing both you and the planet less than a new fast trend purchase.

Start shopping secondhand

In a world of over seven billion people, there will inevitably be a few hopeless shopaholics for whom minimalist purchases just aren’t an option. Luckily, there’s still a place for them in sustainable fashion. Irredeemable shopaholics who still want to reduce their carbon footprint should consider shopping secondhand.

second hand shopping

As no new pieces are produced, purchasing second hand helps minimize the fashion industry’s carbon footprint. Additionally, shoppers get the chance to give abandoned or long-forgotten items a new life.

Wrapping up

Even though the suggestions above may appear minimal or even superficial, they are a step towards a greener planet. Opting for recycled fiber or shopping secondhand are small changes with which individuals can help reduce our humanity’s carbon footprint.

Even a quick comment to a friend about being more mindful of their shopping habits may make all the difference and encourage them to work on their own minimalist and sustainable closet!
